Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Sigismonda." Printed c.1822 from the original Hogarth plate. An engraving of Hogarth's original oil painting of Sigismunda, commissioned by John and Josiah Boydell for their editions of Hogarth's works. The painting was advertised using the subscription ticket 'Time Smoking a Picture,' a demonstration of Hogarth's challenge to the supposed primacy of the ancients. Unfortunately the painting was heavily criticised, and Hogarth was so dispirited as to almost give up painting entirely. The scene is taken from Boccaccio's Decameron. Sigismunda, dressed in a veil, heavy long-sleeved dress, and pearls, has just received delivery of a golden goblet, which houses the heart of her husband, Guiscardo. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate first published in 1795 (dated on the print 1795). SIZE: The printed area is approximately 42 x 38 cm, 16.5 x 15 inches (large) plus good margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Benjamin Smith (1754-1833) from the original painting by Hogarth. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". Benjamin Smith was a British engraver, printseller, and publisher. A student of Francesco Bartolozzi, his most celebrated engravings were the series he undertook for Boydell's editions of Shakespeare and Milton PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock.
