He began as a captain in the Grenadier Company of the 3rd Regiment, Philadelphia Militia, eventually rising to lieutenant colonel. He resigned on October 22, 1777, due to a promotion disappointment. He remained involved in civilian roles throughout the war and its aftermath. In 1794, Gurney commanded the 1st Regiment of the Philadelphia Brigade as a colonel, but faced issues maintaining discipline among his troops. In 1799, he was promoted to Brigadier General. Apart from military and civic duties, he served on Dickinson College's Board of Trustees from 1798 until his passing. Gurney died on May 25, 1815.
