1789 Antique Print: Inchcolm Monastery, Firth of Forth, Scotland after Grose

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "Monastery in Inch Colm. Pl.1.", Firth of Forth, Scotland. A view of the cloisters, chapter house and tower of the church. DATE PRINTED: 1797 (dated 1788 on the print, the date of engraving which is a little odd as the text suggests that the view was drawn in 1789).SIZE: The printed area is approximately 18 x 14 cm (7.25 x 5.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Grose and engraved by Samuel Sparrow. Grose toured Britain and Ireland with a draftsman-servant, Tom Cocking, taking views of antiquities for his various publications. Published by Samuel Hooper, Ludgate Hill, London. PROVENANCE: This print was published in "The Antiquities of Scotland", by Francis Grose. Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin. TYPE: Antique copper block engraving printed on paper. There is no additional postage charge if you order more than one print.BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Inchcolm Abbey is a medieval abbey located on the island of Inchcolm in the Firth of Forth in Scotland. The Abbey, which is located at the centre of the island, was in the 12th century during the episcopate of Gregoir, Bishop of Dunkeld. Later tradition placed it back in the reign of King Alexander I of Scotland (1107-24), who probably had some involvement in the island. He was apparently washed ashore there after a shipwreck in 1123, and took shelter in a hermit's hovel. The Abbey was first used as a priory by Augustinian monks, becoming a full abbey in 1235. The island was attacked by the English from 1296 onwards, and the Abbey was abandoned after the Scottish Reformation in 1560. It has since been used for defensive purposes, as it is situated in a strategically important position in the middle of the Firth of Forth. A medieval inscription carved above the Abbey's entrance reads: Stet domus haec donec fluctus formica marinos ebibat, et totum testudo permabulet orbem 'May this house stand until an ant drains the flowing sea, and a tortoise walks around the whole world'. Inchcolm Abbey has the most complete surviving remains of any Scottish monastic house. The cloisters, chapter house, warming house, and refectory are all complete, and most of the remaining claustral buildings survive in a largely complete state. The least well-preserved part of the complex is the monastic church.
