Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) pair of desirable antique prints "The Right Honorable Henry Fox, Lord Holland." and below "The Right Honble Jas Caulfield Earl of Charlemont of the Kingdom of Ireland Head of the Volunteers." Portraits show Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland and James Caulfield, 1st Earl of Charlemont. Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland, PC (28 September 1705 – 1 July 1774), of Holland House in Kensington and of Holland House in Kingsgate, Kent, was a leading British politician. He identified primarily with the Whig faction. He held the posts of Secretary at War, Southern Secretary and Paymaster of the Forces, from which latter post he enriched himself. Whilst widely tipped as a future Prime Minister, he never held that office. His third son was the Whig statesman Charles James Fox. James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont KP PC (Ire) (18 August 1728 – 4 August 1799) was an Irish statesman. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate first published in 1782 (dated on the prints). These portraits were published only posthumously by Boydell in 1790. SIZE: The printed area of each is approximately 24 x 18 cm, 9.5 x 7 inches (medium) with wide margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Etching by Joseph Haynes (Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 1760 – Chester 1829) from paintings by William Hogarth. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". Haynes was an etcher and occasional mezzotinter, studied under John Hamilton Mortimer (q.v.) and made etchings after his work after his death in 1779. Ended career as a drawing master in Chester, where he died on 14 December 1829. PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock.
