Please see photos. Guillaume Thomas Raynal was a French writer and man of letters during the Age of Enlightenment. Third and last edition, the best and most complete as to the text bringing the number of volumes to 10 against 7. A large part of this work is said to have been written by Diderot, and others. The sentiments and criticisms contained in it prevented its publication in France. The book was condemned by the French parliament and church dignitaries, and Raynal was forced to leave France. Raynal went into exile to Berlin where he was coolly received by Frederick the Great, in spite of his connection with the philosophe part. At St. Petersburg he met with a more cordial reception from Catherine II, and was permitted to return to France in 1787. RARES1781ANOA.
