Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print 'Frontispiece to Taylor's Perspective', by Hogarth. Printed c.1822 from the original Hogarth plate. An engraving designed for Kirby's Perspective of Architecture, first published in 1761. The second edition followed in 1765, with Taylor, the publisher, substituting his name for Kirby. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate published in 1760 (dated 1760 on the print). SIZE: The sheet is approximately 47 x 63.5 cm, 18.5 x 25 inches (large). Print platemark is 9.5 x 15.5” ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Hogarth and engraved by William Woollett (15 August 1735 – 23 May 1785). William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies with recut plates.TYPE: Antique copper plate etching and engraving printed on paper.
