The maps have one or two stamps on each denoting "Cuming Bequest - Southwark Public Libraries, Walworth Road". The Cuming collection contains many items collected by the Richard & Henry Cuming over two generations - some 100,000 objects were collected with most of these donated to the people of Southwark, where the Cuming Museum opened in 1906. Many items can still be viewed at the Southwark Heritage Centre today. Henry Syer Cuming (b 1817, d 1902) had an eye for collecting both unusual and more everyday items of daily life, which now provide a fascinating look back at the past. This volume contains a "withdrawn" stamp from the library. The stamps on the maps themselves tend to be towards the borders of the maps (see photos). There are also a number of "Cuming Bequest" stamps on other non-map pages throughout the volume. Thomas Jefferys was a leading map publisher, engraver and cartographer based in London, who also served as geographer to King George III. He spent time as an apprentice to Emanuel Bowen, another leading mapmaker of the time. Some mild foxing and age toning in places but generally the pages are in very good condition. The colour on the map pages remains generally bright. Most copies of this edition are uncoloured or else just coloured at the country borders, whereas this copy has fuller colouring on the map pages. A couple of maps have been neatly repaired/reinforced on the rear. A unique volume with unusual provenance. Size approx 18.5cm tall x 11cm wide (7.5" x 4.5") See photographs for further confirmation of condition. Please ask if any additional details or photographs are required.
