Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print 'Martin Folkes Esq', by Hogarth. Printed c.1822 from the original Hogarth plate. An engraving of Martin Folkes PRS FRS (29 October 1690 – 28 June 1754). Folkes was an English antiquary, numismatist, mathematician, and astronomer. Elected a member of the Royal Society aged twenty four, he became Vice President on the nomination of Sir Isaac Newton in 1723. He subsequently became President in 1741after Sir Hans Sloane retired and was also President of the Society of Antiquaries from 1750 until his death. His broad fleshy face and thick lips hint at Folkes' dissipated reputation and irregular private life. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate first published in c.1756. SIZE: The printed area is approximately 34 x 24 cm, 13 x 9.25 inches (large). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn, invented and engraved by Hogarth. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies with recut plates.TYPE: Antique copper plate etching and engraving printed on paper. AUTHENTICITY: This is an authentic antique print, published at the date stated above. I do not offer reproductions. It is not a modern copy.
