Item Description:Certificate of Authentication Treasure of Galle HarborEarly Muslim seafarers called it Serindib. The Romans, Taprobane. Legend has it that King Solomon sent his men there in search of jewels for the Queen of Sheba.Sri Lanka dangles off the southeastern coast of India like one of the spectacular precious gems for which it is known. In colonial times, the port of Galle, on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast, served as a natural staging post on the sea route linking Europe, Africa, and Arabia to the riches of the Orient. This is why it became the Spice Route. The first recorded visits by Europeans happened by accident when, in April 1505, a Portuguese fleet bound for the Maldives Islands was blown off course and took shelter in Galle Harbor. Lourenço de Almeida, the commander of the fleet, established friendly relations with the local king and was granted rights to set up a trading post. The Portuguese traded there for 150 years, exploiting the area's riches, especially for its valuable trade in cinnamon, which was shipped back to eager markets in Europe. But as the maritime power declined, they became a target for the Dutch, who were aggressively expanding their Asian colonies in the 17th century. In 1640, a Dutch fleet arrived and wrested control of Galle from the Portuguese. They then fortified it as a major stronghold for the Dutch East India Company.Under the Dutch, many of Galle’s original fortifications were expanded into what we see today. By the 18th century, Galle was an essential trade center, second only to Colombo. Ships from all over the world called in at Galle to buy and sell goods, making it one of the busiest ports in the East. The VOC arms emblazoned on many of the old buildings in Galle still evoke the Dutch East India Company, so central to the region’s history.By the 19th century, however, Galle had lost much of its former glory. But the East India Company, like Galle, endures on. While it no longer dominates the world as it once did, it continues to cast a long shadow across history, from Clive of India to a Space Odyssey. The late Captain Robert Fisher, together with author Robert Lewis Knecht, worked with local divers to recover some of the lost East India Company’s treasure. The coin or jewelry accompanying this certificate was recovered from a shipwreck in Galle Harbor, Sri Lanka.Certified by: Capt. Carl L.
