Description: 1700 - LEAF WITH 2 IMAGES FROM THE "MORTIER BIBLE" TOP: Joseph interprets the dreams of PharoahBOTTOM: Joseph governs in Egypt Signed/inscribed at the bottom by Jan Goeree (designer) Mortier (publisher) Captions in French and Dutch The print comes from the publication generally referred to as the "Mortier Bible" (in Dutch, Mortierbijbel or Prentbijbel Mortier). The official title was "Histoire des Ouden en Niewen Testaments, verrykt met meer dan vierhonered printverbeeldingen in koper gesneeden ("History of the Old and New Testaments enriched with more than four hundred printed illustrations on copper") The textual component and captions were made by David Martin, a French Protestant theologian in exile, and the illustrations were engraved by a number of artists working in the Netherlands at the time including such luminaries as Bernard Picart, Jan Luyken and Gerard Hoet. The publisher, Pieter (or Pierre) Mortier I (Leiden 1661-Amsterdam 1711) was the son of a political refugee from France. He became a skilled mapmaker and engraver, travelling to France in 1681-1685 and then settling in Amsterdam where he operated as a printer and bookseller until his death in 1711. In 1690, he won the right to publish maps and atlases by French publishers in Amsterdam for the Dutch market, and extended this privilege to print an illustrated Bible. He went on to become the founder of a printing and publishing dynasty through his sons, all named after him. CONDITION. Good. Printed on "laid" paper. Platemark lines intact, adequate margins all round, a few spots and handling marks in the blank margins entirely commensurate with age. Nothing major. Size: Large folio size.
