His Six Voyages became a best seller and was translated [from the original French] into German, Dutch, Italian, and English during his lifetime. The work is frequently quoted by modern scholars writing about the period.”[wikipedia] Sturdy and compact [approximately 5.5 x 3.25 x 2 inches] vellum-bound volume of 792 pages - in unusually good condition. Published by Johannes van Someren in 1678 at Amsterdam, “Suivant la Copie Imprimée à Paris” [in 1676] Complete, with 10 illustrations or plates in total: including the “frontispiece” [1st photo], one other full page plate of a “fer de la lance” [spearhead], and 8 folding plates. Several of the folding plates are bound in at a different place in the book than what is called for in the list of illustrations - but they are all present and fully intact. The final plate is bound-in upside down. Note the folding “plans” of “Bagdat” and “Candahar”. Front pastedown endpaper missing. Name and what appears to be a “1779 10/3” date written on the top of the title page. No writing or marking to the text itself, but in addition to the name and date on the title page, there is what appears to be the date 10/14/1704 written on the rear free endpaper. One page had a half-inch edge tear, now repaired on one side with a short piece of pH-neutral archival tape. In general, the pages are surprisingly free of foxing or other spots or stains, though please understand that there are intermittent marks of unknown origin here and there within the book. Note the “tidemark” on the upper edge of the frontispiece and the title page, which can be seen more clearly on the front free endpaper. The most notable marks are on the endpapers, as is often the case. Please examine photos closely if interested, and feel free to ask a question, or to request an additional photo.
