Scarce undated type struck during the combined reign of Mary Tudor (first daughter of King Henry VIII) and Philip II of Spain from 1554 to 1558.Many known examples were intentionally defaced by those who hated Mary’s Catholic faith and her union with Spain. Spink S-2498, approx 31mm. Well struck and centered with detailed portraits and full readable legends. Certified by PCGS to VF 20, Population Census: This coin, only 2 higher. Obverse: facing busts of Mary and Philip, crown above, PHILIP ET MARIA D G R FR NEAP PR HISP (Philip and Mary by the Grace of God, King of England, France, Naples and Prince of Spain). Reverse: crowned shield with denomination (X II) flanking crown, POSVIMS DEVM ADIVTOREM NOSTRVM (we have made God my helper).
