Description: French "talking plates" were a collecting fad in the 1800's, usually showing French culture or history. This series of humorous plates depicts various flowers, with a couple demonstrating the flower in question. This is a reproduction of a 1800’s French Talking plate bearing Gien’s hallmark used 1960 – 1971. I am offering the set of 12 plates (2 sets of 6) making it easy to start entertaining right away. Here is the full list of plates in the series. All plates are in great vintage condition. A) Fleur D'Orange (Orange Blossom) does not have association / meaning on plate - Shows a wedding scene. The groom says "If my wife is a rosebush, can I say I have her rosebush?". B) Bluet (Blueberry) means "Delicacy" - Shows woman after just having slapped the man. "Put your paws down, it stains". C) Coquelicot (Poppy) means "Consolidation" - She's crying, he's consoling her. "Big Beast, don't cry, I'm saying I will marry you". D) Rose Tremiere (Hollyhock) means "Fertility" - She has two babes in arms, with a 3rd on the way. "I would like to have a dozen". E) Boutons de Roses Blanches (White Rose Buds) means "Heart which ignores love" - He exclaims "Love, what is that?!" F) Marguerite de Pres (Daisy / Meadow Moth) means "I will think about it" - Text translates to "He loves me a little, passionately". Faience is a tin glazed earthenware made in France, Germany, Spain, and Scandinavia. In Italy, it is known as majolica. In the Netherlands and England, it is known as Delft. The tin glaze used in faience is actually a lead glaze that has been rendered white and opaque by the addition of tin oxide. In the production process, an unglazed article is fired in a kiln and is then dipped in the tin glaze, which is allowed to dry. Designs are then painted on the glaze, which sets them off and preserves them during a second firing at high temperature. The colours used to paint designs were limited to the few that could tolerate high heat until the 18th century, when a low-fire overglaze enamel was used. From the time when the company was established two hundred years ago, Gien Faïencerie, the largest faïence making factory of its kind in Europe, has symbolized elegance, luxury and the unique French “art de vivre”, the legendary French way of life. It gained renown producing bespoke dinner services bearing family crests, for prominent French and European houses of the time, and also, through production of tiles for the Parisian Metro stations.
