Description: Ranch Romances 12 issues 1953-1957 This is a nice group of a dozen issues of a pulp western magazine, all published between 1953-1957. Ranch Romances was unusual among the popular mass westerns of that era, because it featured women as the leading characters in its stories, instead of focusing on the typical macho cowboys, gunslingers and lawmen who were the heroes of most western pulps. They thus present an early, somewhat-feminist slant on what was usually a totally masculine area of literature. Michelle Nolan, author of a 2008 book on the subject, Love on the Racks, wrote: Most [of its] stories from the 1950s hold up well today, especially since many of the iron-willed heroines featured in those issues foreshadow today's own independent women. They really are entertaining reading. . . . The covers of Ranch Romances, however, remain ever intriguing. Their understated but effective images include heroines in distress, heroines thoroughly in charge of the situation, and heroines looking just a tad come-hither. The one constant is that every cover of Ranch Romances has an attractive heroine. The magazines in this collection were all printed on cheap pulp paper, and show typical wear for the genre. They measure 6.75 x 9 inches in size, and are over 100 pages in length. Their appealing color covers show some modest amount of damage, but they are all complete, and overall the group remains in generally good condition. Each of the 12 covers is shown in the accompanying photos, so you can see exactly what their appearance looks like. Besides the multiple fictional stories it printed, the magazine had some regular fan mag features, such as news on the westerns being currently shown on TV and in the movies, profiles of movie stars (ones featured in this group include Charlton Heston, Alan Ladd, Glenn Ford, William Holden, and Ernest Borgnine, as well as an ad showing Marilyn Monroe. It also carried a page each time of "lonely hearts letters," from both male and female readers, writing in search of romance. Ranch Romance came out every two weeks. The issues in this group were put out in: May, 1953 - #1 May, 1954 - #2 Aug., 1954 - #1 Nov., 1954 - #2 Feb., 1955 - #2 April, 1955 - #3 Aug., 1956 - #1 Sept., 1956 - #1 Sept., 1956 - #2 June, 1957 - #1 July, 1957 - #2 Aug., 1957 - #2 [gsp3184] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
