The Wallenstein limited edition, published by Hans von Weber as part of his renowned "Hundertdrucke" series, is a celebrated example of fine German book art from the early 20th century. Issued in two volumes between 1917 and 1919, this exclusive edition was limited to only 100 copies, highlighting von Weber's dedication to high-quality, collectible works. Initially, the illustrations were crafted by the artist Walo von May, but due to unforeseen circumstances, von May could not complete the project. Bruno Goldschmitt stepped in to finish the illustrations, producing several additional pieces that were often included in a separate portfolio or bound at the back of the second volume to preserve the unity of the work. The combination of Schiller's dramatic text with these striking lithographs makes this edition a unique collector's item, appreciated not only for its literary significance but also for its artistry and rarity among von Weber's publications. Emil Hirsch (1866–1954) was a renowned German antiquarian bookseller and publisher, celebrated for his expertise in German and French book illustration, binding art, and classical and romantic literature. He began his career in 1884 as an apprentice at Ludwig Rosenthal's prestigious antiquarian bookshop in Munich. In 1897, after gaining experience across various firms, Hirsch established his own business, specializing initially in Bavarica and Monacensia, later shifting focus to German literature, incunabula, and luxury editions. A founding member of the Gesellschaft der Münchener Bücherfreunde (Society of Munich Book Friends), he was instrumental in promoting the book arts movement, inspiring Hans von Weber to create the "Hundertdrucke" series and supporting the Bremer Presse. His Munich shop became a hub for intellectuals and artists, such as Karl Wolfskehl and Franz Marc. The rise of the Nazi regime led to the closure of his business in 1937, and he emigrated to New York in 1938, where he continued in the book trade with Walter Schatzki and his son-in-law, Hellmuth Wallach, until his death. Hirsch's legacy remains significant in the world of bibliophily and the preservation of literary heritage.
